Introduction to Arithmancy

Arithmancy is a branch of Divination that involved the use of numbers along with basic mathematical equations. Most wizards and witches use arithmancy in everyday use to find lucky numbers. Using arithmancy to find lucky numbers can maximize a wizard or witch’s performance for maximum well being.

Arithmancy can be easily used with numbers. The goal to finding a lucky number is to minimize it down from in-between 1-9. One easy example is a Chinese fortune cookie. With a fortune cookie, five numbers are given. Those numbers are then taken individually, and added together.

A Chinese fortune cookie states these five numbers: 4, 10, 14, 25, 38

Those numbers are taken and individually separated: 4, 1, 0, 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 8

Those numbers are then added: 4+1+0+1+4+2+5+3+8=28

That total is then broken down again: 2+8=10

If that number is a double digit, break it down once more: 1+0=1

The person’s lucky number for the day is 1.

Arithmancy can also be used with words. Every letter is given a value.
A=1
B=2
C=3
D=4
E=5
F=6
G=7
H=8
I=9
J=10
K=11
L=12
M=13
N=14
O=15
P=16
Q=17
R=18
S=19
T=20
U=21
V=22
W=23
X=24
Y=25
Z=26

Now, the most common example would be the use of the name. The name can be broken down in many ways. The word’s numbers can be put together in many combination. Here is the most common form:

Let’s take a name. How about Albus Dumbledore. Find the value of those letters:
A=1
L=12
B=2
U=21
S=19

D=4
U=21
M=13
B=2
L=12
E=3
D=4
O=15
R=18
E=3

Now then, add the numbers individually by the word:
Albus=1+12+2+21+19=55
Dumbledore=95

Now, break down the name again:
Albus=5+5=10
Dumbledore=9+5=14

Break it down once more:
Albus=1+0=1
Dumbledore=1+4=5

Finally, add those two numbers together:
Albus Dumbledore=1+5=6

Albus Dumbledore’s lucky number is the number 6.

Those are only a few simple ways to determine some lucky numbers. Arithmancy can play an important role in life by helping lucky numbers to represent dates. For example, Albus Dumbledore will be lucky on every 6th day of the month as well as in June, the 6th month of the year. Try it out for yourself!
