After hogwarts was built godric gryffindor went in search for salazar slytherin to bring him back to the school. After salazar refused and sent a blue cator at godirc when he was not looking. fawkes salazar slytherins phoenix he had stolen from godric before he left hogwarts flew from salazars shoulder to help godric. when godric was heeled he drew up and dueled salazar after winnning he left salazar week and helpless and returned to hogwarts with his new pet fawkes after godric died he left his phoenix to his heir where it was passeddown through his heirs until it reached james potter.

During his schooling at hogwarts it was stolen by a student named tom riddle the heir of salazar slytherin but once again before there graduation from hogwarts james potter and his friends padfoot and wormtail and moony had a plan to steel back james pet fawkes .. he couldnt just tell kettleburn the headmaster because only owls, rats and cats are allowed at hogwarts. During there plan tom riddle knew they where coming and was ready with his friends lucius,crabbe and goyle only narrowly

Escaping tom riddle, james had his phoenix back and for some reason when they though how tom knew they where coming wormtail suddenly begun to blame it on sirius. james not worrying about anything except his fawkes dismissed it all and when tom riddle became voldemont he set out to destroy potter and regain his great grandfathers phoenix after gaining there where abouts from his undercover agent wormtail he used his avada kedavra attack to destroy james and his wife he had back fawkes and decided to destroy the last heir of godric gryffindor and whatever threat he might be to voldemont in the future .

While taking away fawkes from james's dead body he did not notice lily potters last act of putting on a protection charm around her son harry .. voldemonts avada kedavra attack was rebounded and sent back at himself .. with all his spells hed used to reach immortality one worked leaving him a dead shell of a man and in the confusion hagrid swept in through the burning house and carried harry out with fawkes clutching behind him. when hagrid met padfoot outside he borrowed his motor bike and left for the dursleys where he was to leave harry with dumbledore when he got there he noticed fawkes had followed him and that he had landed on dumbledores shoulder

After dumbledore explained that james had been his best student and he had known about the phoenix since he was head of gryffindor before mcgonnagal dumbledore decided to keep fawkes until one day he could give him back to the heir of godric gryffindor the rightful owner of the phoenix . Harry Potter .
