== Foreword ==
First of all, I wish you will appreciate this book especially made for teaching Potions to 1st year students of [http://www.hsom.net/forum Hogwarts School of Magic]. I hope that even if I'm no longer the Potions Master in our beloved school, this book will still be used by teachers and students to help in teaching/studying Potions.

Potions is one of the important and hard subject currently being taught at HSOM so I've done my best to present all the lessons as simple and easy as I can. I just hope that all the time and hard work I've spent in making this book will not be put into waste but instead, be a foundation for you to be a great responsible Potions Master.

I dedicate this book to all the members of Hogwarts School of Magic especially !HarryPotter80 a.k.a. !^!^Harry!^!^Potter!^!^ who had been my student and friend since I started teaching and Rhena Potter who was very close to me until now. I just hope I've inspired all of you even in the slightest way because all I do in connection with the school, I do for all of you. Do you want to be a great Potions Master? In order for you to be one, you must first master the Fundamentals of Potions and understand how each aspects contribute in a Potion. In this lesson you will learn all the basic knowledge about the Fundamentals of Potion. (I.P.T.)

The effect of a Potion depends on the ingredients used to make it. Before you use an ingredient in a Potion, you should know what will be it's effect and how it will react to other ingredients. The following rules should be observed when dealing with Potion ingredients.

   1. In order for a Potion to have a powerful magical effect it must contain something from a magical animal. Simple Potions often don't have ingredients such as this and as a result, it's magical effect isn't very strong unlike advance Potions.
   2. Combining ingredients from two or more different magical animals is very dangerous but if you were able to do so, it's magical effect will be very strong.
   3. All the ingredients that you're going to use in making Potion must be pure and authentic.

The way you prepare an ingredient can alter it's  effect either by enhancing or speeding up it's effect. There are plenty of ways in preparing a Potion and each of them has different effects. The following are the basic ways of preparing Potion ingredients which is both used in simple and advance Potions.

    * Regular Cutting - This method is the preferred way in preparing Potion ingredients because it doesn't alter any of it's effect.
    * Slicing - This method is usually used when the Potion needs the ingredient's effect to be enhanced about two times than normal. The ingredients must be sliced into small pieces in order for the alteration to occur.
    * Crushing - This method is usually used when the Potion needs to speeds up the ingredient's effect about two times than normal. The ingredient must be crushed into powder in order for the alteration to occur.
    * Liquefying - This method is usually used before boiling or if the Potion needs a liquefied ingredient. It also speeds up the ingredient's effect about three times than normal. The ingredient must be turned into liquid form in order for the alteration to occur.
    * Boiling - This method is used in separating ingredients from one another. It is also used to extract impurities from ingredients.

Each ingredients have different brewing time so this means that the more ingredient a Potion have, the longer it's brewing time is. Usually this are advance Potions but simple Potions have shorter brewing time.
