IRC Chat Room
How do I join the Chat Room?
You can join the chat room in 2 ways
- Using the Board's CGI:IRC client
- Using a 3rd party IRC client such as mIRC or XCHAT
CGI:IRC
To use the Board's CGI:IRC client you need to either be a Premium Member or a new member. New members have access to CGI:IRC for free for the first 30 days.
To access CGI:IRC you simply need to click on the Chat Room link on the sidebar and then enter your username and click on Chat
This will then connect the CGI:IRC client to the server and join the channel.
You can join other channels such as your house channel by typing /join #channel. If the channel has a password like the house channels you type /join #channel password
Eg: /join #mycoolchannel mypassword
3rd party clients
If you already have an IRC client such as mIRC or XCHAT then you can simply connect to irc.linkirc.net and then join the boards channel #hogwarts_school_of_magic
There is a number of resources available for mIRC to help get you started in the orientation forum.
If you need help connecting a 3rd party client then you can ask in the channel from CGI:IRC or ask in the help forum.
What are the Chat Rules?
General Chat Rules
- Remember all board rules are applicable in chat
- Speak only in English
- No spamming of other channels or networks
- Chat is a privilage not a right
- The chat room has children as young as 10 visiting so keep it clean or take it to a different channel
- Excessive use of CAPS will get you kicked from the channel. Using caps is considered shouting and isn't wanted nor needed. Consider this kicking a warning.
- If an Op (!, @ or %) tells you to do something or not to do something there is generally a reason for this so please try to obey. If you are uncertain as to why please feel free to ask
Op specific rules:
- Bans set by link can be removed by any !, @ or % but are most likely to get re-added if there is a reason for them being there
- Bans set by another op can only be removed with their permission or by Darkbeholder or Professor Zhaan
- Abuse of op power will lead to the loss of the power
- Junior Professors will become Senior Professors once they can demonstrate trust to an acceptable level.
What do those !, @, % and + signs mean?
| ! | Senior Staff (Headmaster, Deputy Headmistress, and Head of Houses) |
| @ | Head boy, Head Girl and Senior Professors (Professors who have served a long time and those which have shown they can be trusted with channel power) |
| % | Prefects, Trusted Long term members and Junior Professors (Junior Professors are new professors) |
| + | Channel Regulars, Random people who just got voiced to separate them from the bots |
| Bots and people who have just joined but not been voiced |
If you do not have the rank you should have please ask someone to fix that for you. Only Darkbeholder can add ! and everyone else can add someone to a lower rank than their own. (So @'s can add both % and + but not @ or !)
How do I register my name for IRC?
You can register your name on IRC to stop other people being able to use it. Once you have registered your name you need to identify your name each time you connect after that or you will be changed to another name.
Registering Your name
To register your name simply type /ns register [password] or /msg nickserv register [password]
eg: /ns register anygoodpassword or /msg nickserv register anygoodpassword
Identifying to your name
If you have registered your nick then every time you connect you will have to identify to it (think of it as logging in) each time you connect to the server. The command is /ns identify [password] or /msg nickserv identify [password]
eg: /ns identify anygoodpassword or /msg nickserv identify anygoodpassword
Depending on your IRC client you can either the /ns command which does the same thing as /msg nickserv but is shorter to type
How come I can't use the chat room link anymore?
The chat room link is only available to new members (less than 30 days) or premium members. See The first FAQ for more details
Why is no one speaking?
The chat room is open 24/7 and people come in and out all day. We have users from all over the world so you may have chosen a slow time. There will generally be several people who are always in the channel but they might not actually be at their computers watching the chat room. You may not get an instant response so please wait a bit before deciding that no one is there. It is slightly annoying to see someone join, say hello and then leave 5 seconds later because they didn't get an instant response.
