"Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts."

-- Professor M.M.

Transfiguration is defined as the magical art which changes one object into another.

Evidence of Transfiguration spells exists in ancient times as well. Circe, a witch who lived in the Greek island of Aeaea, was famous for turning lost sailors into pigs.

The opposite of Transfiguration is Untransfiguration. In Untransfiguration, something is returned to its natural state.

Transfiguration is subject to rules, such as Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration, which has five Principal Exceptions.

Transfiguration lessons under Professor Bliss are done in his own, unique manner. When is fitting, the class will be divided so that elder students may explore a more advanced type of Transfiguration while younger students stick to the fundamentals.
